Every year, my wife and I visit her sister and her family in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2008 we all drove up to Utah, visiting several national parks, including Arches National Park.

Delicate Arch is Utah's national symbol and is located on a ridge a 45-minute up-hill hike from the nearest parking lot. However, it is worth the effort. The arch is located on the side of a wide natural hollow, which reminded me of an amphitheatre. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as there is not much that is 'delicate' about this arch. It has many other nicknames, the most apt of which I think is 'Cowboy Chaps'.

This scene is of the sun setting over Canyonlands and shining through the arch. Although the rocks are naturally an orange colour, the sunset significantly enhances this to give a breathtaking effect.

Award-winning artist, Richard Harpum, paints in a realist style, paying meticulous attention to detail. His medium of choice is acrylics on canvas or board but he also uses oils and paints watercolour florals. Richard's primary focus is landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and gardens but he also paints portraits, still lifes and florals. The effective use of light is a key ingredient to all of Richard’s works and he spends a great deal of time before starting a painting in selecting a composition that provides both drama and contrast.
